This certainly rings true. Being so far from family those close friends that you can rely on for anything truly become a part of your family. My best friends are strewn out all over the country and I still talk to them all the time and am closer to them than I have ever been to any other friends when I lived back home.
There's something about the military that just bonds people together.

I'd want to go back to Germany. We spent 6 out of the first 8 years of marriage there, so it feels like home for us. Plus, we are a stone's throw from the rest of Europe. I want to better understand and speak German, and want to be somewhere where everyday seems extra-special--cause it's all foreign. And I want a GREAT BIG HOUSE--so I can go junking to my heart's delight--and still have room for more!

Or Ireland--though I'm thinking we don't have any bases there. :) I love Ireland almost as much as Germany! Belgium, too!

That's tough! There are so many places I'd love to live. I'm still in the "I want to travel the world" mode. I'd love to be stationed in Guam, Hawaii, the Azores...anywhere tropical. I also would love to experience living in Germany. We've visited a few times while we were stationed in England, and I fell in love with the scenery.

I think it all depends on where we're stationed. With alot of the Air Force bases privatizing housing, sometimes it's more practical for us to rent off base. But here in SC, we live on base because 1) it's not yet privatized here, and 2) our BAH is not enough for us to get the size home we need in a safe area. And with the gas prices the way they are, it's nice that my hubby is just a couple minutes from his office.

When we were overseas I definitely preferred living on base, because the things were so expensive on the local economy. We were spending lots of money in gas so that we could drive the 30 minutes to the base to get our food from the commissary, or go get clothes from the BX.
